About this Event

Ukrainian cuisine is the collection of the various cooking traditions of the people of Ukraine, one of the largest and most populous European countries. The cuisine emphasizes the importance of wheat in particular, as the country is often referred to as the “breadbasket of Europe”. The majority of Ukrainian dishes descend from ancient peasant dishes based on plentiful grains, as well as staple vegetables such as potato, cabbages, mushrooms and beetroots. Ukrainian dishes incorporate both traditional Slavic techniques as well as other European techniques, a byproduct of years of foreign jurisdiction and influence.

Gear up for a truly magical culinary journey as Zhanna gives a unique insight into these classic Ukrainian recipes, their history, and why they are so delicious.

During this class Zhanna will share about the ingredients and various cooking techniques that are unique to this cuisine.

Dishes you will learn in this Cooking Class:

Borscht – The National Dish of Ukraine

Borscht is the original staple of Ukrainian cuisine. This hearty soup is made from meat broth, cabbage, carrots, potatoes, onions, tomatoes, and beets, which give borscht its signature red color. Traditionally borscht is served with sour cream and dill on top.

Piroshki

Ukrainian comfort food – the boat-shaped pastries have an impressive range of fillings. In this class we will learn two fillings – beef and veggies. Piroshki are typically baked or fried.

Deruny/ Draniki

Potato pancakes with the Ukrainian twist.
